Welcome to the April Newsletter

Please don't hesitate to get in touch if you find errors in this blog entry or any others.  I appreciate your feedback.

There is a lot of information in this newsletter.  This is a busy time for calls for entries, grants and exhibition/Sales.

Thanks to everyone who has emailed information to me for this newsletter.  Please keep it coming.

I have added a page (see menu at right) for groups that are active in Alberta and might be of interest to you.  Last week I was lucky enough to be invited to CBBAG Alberta, chaired by SDA:Alberta member Susan Kristoferson.  It was a great experience and I recommend that you look into their activities, they are a wonderfully welcoming and diverse group.
Other groups throughout the province can be highlighted and included on the page of "Groups in Alberta involved in Surface Design and Fibre Arts." Simply supply me with the relevant information.

Now, here is some news from SDA

From Candace Edgerley,
President, SDA Board of Directors

Welcome new SDA Executive Director, Diane Sandlin

Dear SDA Members,

Please help me welcome our new Executive Director, Diane Sandlin of Austin, Texas. A fiber artist and member of SDA, Diane comes to us with a strong background as an executive in the insurance industry and management training in nonprofit organizations.  She has served on the board of a number of non-profit organizations and is anxious to put her skill set to work for SDA. A founding member and past president of Austin Fiber Artists, she is also a member of Studio Art Quilt Associates and the Fiber Artists of San Antonio.

Diane will join the board of directors at the spring board meeting after the SDA/SAQA Conference in Philadelphia. I hope you will take a moment to become acquainted with Diane and her work by visiting her website

The selection committee was impressed by the qualifications of the applicants for the position, and thank those who came forward to apply.

Candace Edgerley
President

Call for artists looking for exhibition space
Especially for the summer and fall.
Attached is a write-up .

If you are a talented artist, looking for a new venue to show your work, Rosebud may be the choice for you. Akokiniskway Gallery is currently under new management and engaged in a call for artists and portfolio submissions - we are interested in seeing your work.

Are you ready to move into the provincial market, and exhibit your work in the most significant arts village in Alberta? This may be the next natural stage for your career as a fine artist, whether you are building on the local success that you have already experienced or simply because your work does not fit into local venues and requires a more grounded audience.

Moving into the fine art world can be extremely challenging for those who do not already have a strong national presence or connections and a call for artists from many galleries may only be aimed at artists who are already well established.

Akokinskway Gallery, is a fine art gallery in Rosebud, home to the well-known professional Rosebud Dinner and Theatre. This is an ideal location for all artists to show their work and get the experience of showing their work to a provincial audience.

Akokiniskway Gallery is currently accepting submissions, and is sending out a call to artists from around the province, and at all stages in their art careers, to submit their portfolios for consideration.

Artists interested in exhibiting at the Akokiniskway Gallery should send us a package including:
- CV
- Artist statement
- No more than 10 images (digital images on a CD only)
- A related image list
- The proposal of the work you hope to show
Also include a envelope with postage for the safe return of your images.  Proposal packages can be dropped off at the Rosebud Mercantile, in Rosebud, Alberta. or mailed to:
